Digital Freelancing 101: Start Earning More With These Golden Rules

Step-by-step process to landing more clients and making more money online through freelancing.
The game has changed in recent years.

The creator economy is the future and there’s one huge money-making opportunity that comes along with the visibility of creating content online.

Freelancing.

And freelancing has never been more accessible to people who want to get paid to do what they love.

But freelancing also comes with its own set of rules and strategies that must be followed in order to be successful. Mostly how to properly lure in clients, establishing authority within your niche, then using personalized consulting or products to make the big bucks.

1 | Find your perfect clients.

The first step to freelancing success is finding the right clients. You want to work with clients who value your work and are willing to pay you what you’re worth.

There are a few ways to find these clients:

Use freelancer platforms like Upwork or Fiverr to find clients who are looking for freelancers to help with specific projects.
Use your network of friends, family, and acquaintances to find potential clients.
Attend networking events or meetups that are relevant to your freelancing niche.
In today’s digital age the easiest (I use easiest loosely) way to find the right clients is to create content on social media and other websites, like YouTube and Pinterest. The people that interact and engage with your posts can easily become target clients. Use your content as a means of establishing relationships with those that express interest.

2 | Create digital products for passive income.

One of the best ways to make money freelancing is to create digital products that you can sell over and over again.

This is the ever desirable passive income, which means that once you’ve created the product, you don’t have to do any more work to earn money from it. Creating digital products can be a great way to make money freelancing because it allows you to control the price and earn income even when you’re not working.

There are a few different types of digital products you can create:

#Ebooks
#Courses
#Templates
#Printables
#Plugins

Once you make a product and get ready to put it for sale, make sure you learn all about the best landing page practices so as you gain traffic to your product pages, they’ll convert to sales.

3 | Give away knowledge for free.

It sounds counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to attract potential clients is to give away some of your knowledge for free. This could be in the form of blog posts, social media posts, or even video content. Maybe even make one of the digital products you’ve built above free of charge.

Giving away your knowledge for free shows potential clients that you’re an expert in your field and that you’re willing to share your knowledge with them.

Most importantly, It helps build trust between you and potential clients.

When you start creating content online and proving your expertise, you’ll have the perfect customers lining up right in your inbox. Gain a following, show your worth, and reap the benefits.

4 | Establish a public portfolio.

Another great way to attract potential clients is to establish a public portfolio. This could be a website or blog that showcases your freelancing work.

Having a public portfolio allows potential clients to see the quality of your work and decide if they want to work with you. It also helps build your credibility as a freelancer. It’s an immediately satisfying way of showing off just how damn good you are at what you do.

As a writer, I blog and write on several platforms, then curate and package some of the best work into a media kit I can send to any client. This way, they know I take things seriously and have data-proven results.

5 | Offer personalized consulting.

This is the biggest money-make of the bunch, and truly this is what all the rest of the golden rules prep you to achieve.

One of the best ways to make money freelancing is to offer personalized consulting. This could be in the form of one-on-one coaching, group coaching, or even just advising via email or social media.

A clever way my fiancee used to offer personalized consulting was to sell a day’s worth of “walkie-talkie” style feedback. She’d have an earpiece in her ear all day, and her clients could ask questions or request feedback and insight throughout the day. It was awesome for clients because whenever a question popped into their heads, they could immediately get an answer. Convenient as hell.

But personalized consulting can be anything from sharing your knowledge to ghostwriting, the main thing is to take your expertise and utilize it in such a way as to provide a massive benefit to just one person.

6 | Network. Network. Network.
The final golden rule of freelancing is to network like your career depends on it.

This means attending networking events, joining relevant online communities, and connecting with other freelancers. If you come across someone’s content that resonates with you, and they’re in a similar line of work, reach out to them. Hop on a zoom call. Help each other out.

You’ll make friends this way as well as get some referrals if they’re ever too busy or not the right fit for a client. My favorite part about freelancing and creating content online is the friends I’ve made along the way.

Complete Guide to Chicken Feed Formulation At Home: 🐣🐔🐓

Making your own chicken feed at home can help in cutting down on the cost of purchasing chicken feed. Formulating your own chicken feed is advantageous because you will be able to control the quality. Saving on the cost and feeding your chicken with high-quality chicken feed will ensure that you maximize profit.

Feeding chicken with formulated feed at home. Chicken feed amount to about 65% -75% of the cost of raising chicken.

Chicken require different nutrients in varying quantities at different stages of growth. The quantity of nutrients are also subject to the following factors:-

1. Age :

The chicken will have different nutrient requirements at different stages of growth

2. Type of chicken:

Different types, strain, and breeds of chicken will require varying nutrients and feed quantities. This maybe Pure breed, indigenous (Kienyeji) chicken, hybrid chicken

3. Reproduction:

The mating activity in cockrels and the laying level in hens determine the number of nutrients needed. The feed should be formulated to ensure optimal production at this stage

4. Level of activity:

The level of activity is determined by the kind production intensive, semi-intensive or free range.

5. The health condition of the chicken:

The health condition of the chicken affects the number of nutrients it needs. High levels of stress will also determine the dietary requirements. Stress is caused by diseases, poor air quality, unfavorable temperatures, and poor litter quality

6. Purpose:

Whether you are raising the chicken for meat, eggs, breeding or ornamental (pets)

7. Season:

Chicken require more nutrients during cold season than hot seasons. During cold seasons, they need to keep their bodies warm. The heat is generated during the digestion process. Some nutrients produce more heat during this process than other nutrients.

8. The energy level in chicken feed:

Different food has varying amounts of energy levels. Chicken tend to feed more if the feed has low energy levels and eat less when the feed is packed with high amounts of energy

CHICKEN NUTRIENT REQUIREMENTS:

Chicken require essential nutrients for good growth and maximum production. These are:-

1. Fats:
Chicken use fats for energy since fats have high energy density. A type of fat known as linoleic acid is known to improve on the egg size. Chicken need between 3% to 5% fat in their feed.

2. Carbohydrates:

Chicken require energy for all the activity, growth and production. The most common way for the chicken to get carbohydrates is through feeding on grains

3. Proteins and amino acids:

Proteins and amino acids are needed for muscle growth, maintenance, and development of egg protein

4. Vitamins:

Chicken require vitamins are involved in all biological functions of the body. They are required in small quantities. Vitamins are essential for growth, health, and production

5. Water:

This is the most important requirement since it is directly correlated to production. It is needed for absorption of nutrients, digestion of feed, body temperature regulation and excretion of waste. Water intake in chicken should be double the amount of feed taken, in weight.

6. Minerals:

Chicken need minerals for body processes such as skeletal formation, health, metabolic activity and maintaining the body’s acid-base balance

Ingredients for making chicken feed
It is advisable to use locally available ingredients for your chicken feed. In addition to using ingredients that are in season, this will help you further cut the costs of production. Farmers can grow or produce their own ingredients. Care must be taken while producing, handling and storing the ingredients, so as to avoid contamination. This will lead to a lower nutritive value of the feed and sometimes diseases

>> Grains:

Cereal grains are used as the source for carbohydrates (energy). The most commonly used cereal grain in chicken feed is maize. Others are wheat, sorghum, and barley. Depending on availability, it is advisable to use the grains that are in season and at the right price. Please pay attention when changing grains so that they do not cause upsets in the digestive systems. This might affect productivity. Changing grains in chicken feed should be done gradually.

Some farmers have been known to grow their own grains in order to cut on costs. Whether you grow your own or buy. Make sure they are stored well, as poor storage and handling might lead to lower energy levels.

>> Fats:

Fats and oils are used to provide energy to the chicken. Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat soluble, hence fats in chicken feed are used as “carriers” for these vitamins. Fats provide Linoleic acid, which is essential to chicken, especially in layers where it has been known to improve on egg size. Fat and oils in chicken feed are derived from animal and vegetable sources

Animal fat sources include fishmeal (Omena), lard and tallow while vegetable sources come from cottonseed cake, sunflower cake/seeds, canola, rapeseed, and soya.

>> Animal and Vegetable Protein.

Proteins sources for chicken feed are derived from animal protein and vegetable protein
Animal protein comes in form of fishmeal (Omena), meat meal, bone meal, chicken meal, feather meal, and bone meal. Uttermost care should be taken when using the animal byproducts (meat meal, bone meal, chicken meal, feather meal, and bone meal), to avoid diseases

Vegetable protein is usually a by-product of oil seed plants whereby after the oil is extracted, the remains are used/sold as chicken feed ingredients. These include sunflower, soybean, canola etc. They come in form of cake or meal. These are cottonseed cake, soya meal, and sunflower cake.

>> Minerals.
While some minerals are found in other chicken feed ingredients, minerals supplements are usually added to the feed to ensure that all the mineral requirements are met. These are purchased as mineral premixes and added to the feed.

>> Vitamins.
Just like minerals, vitamins can be found naturally in some feed ingredients. To ensure that all required vitamins are provided for, vitamin premixes need to be purchased and added to the feed.

Chicken Feed Formulation.🐣🐣🐣
When making chicken feed, the digestible crude protein formula is used. Without going into the math, the digestible crude formula is based on the total percentage amount of protein in the chicken feed ingredients. Each chicken feed ingredient has different amounts of digestible crude protein.

Layers and broilers require a different amount of proteins at different levels of growth. Let us look at specific examples based on making 70kg of chicken feed.

🐣🐣Making a 70 kg chick mash (1 to 4 weeks):

Growing chicks require feed with Digestible Crude Protein (DCP) of between 18 to 20 percent. The following formulation can be used to make a 70 kg bag of layers chick mash:

Ingredients:
》31.5kg of whole maize
》9.1kg of wheat bran
》7.0kg of wheat pollard
》16.8kg of sunflower (or 16.8 kg of linseed)
》1.5kg of fishmeal
》1.75 kg of lime
》30g of salt
》20g of premix.

Amino acids:
》70g of tryptophan
》3.0g of lysine
》10g of methionine
》70g of Threonine
》50g of enzymes
》60g of coccidiostat
》50g of toxin binder

🐓🐔Making a 70 kg bag of growers’ mash (4 to 8 weeks).

Growers (pullets or young layers) should be provided with feed having a protein content of between 16 and 18 percent. Such feed makes the young layers to grow fast in preparation for egg laying:
》10kg of whole maize
》17kg of maize germ
》13kg of wheat pollard
》10kg of wheat bran
》6kg of cottonseed cake
》5kg of sunflower cake
》3.4kg of soya meal
》2.07kg of lime
》700g of bone meal
》3kg of fishmeal

Additives:
》14g of salt,
》1g of coccidiostat,
》18g of Pre-mix, 1g of zinc bacitracin,
》7g of mycotoxin binder.

🐓🐔Making a 70 kg bag of layers’ mash (8 weeks and above)
》34kg of whole maize
》12kg of Soya
》8kg of fishmeal
》10kg of maize bran, rice germ or Wheat Bran
》6kg of lime

Amino acids:
》175g premix
》70g lysine
》35g methionine
》70g Threonine
》35g tryptophan
》50g toxin binder

Layer feed should contain a Digestible Crude Protein (DCP) content of between 16-18 percent. The feed should contain calcium (lime) for the formation of eggshells (laying hens that do not get enough calcium will use the calcium stored in their own born tissue to produce eggshells). Layer feed should be introduced at 18 weeks.

🐔🐔Formulating a 70 kg bag of broiler feed:

Broilers have different feed requirements in terms of energy, proteins, and minerals during different stages of their growth. It is important that farmers adapt feed rations to these requirements for maximum production. Young broilers have a high protein requirement for the development of muscles, feathers, and other body organs. As the broilers grow, their energy needs for fattening up increase while their protein requirements decrease. They, therefore, require high protein content in their starter rations than in the grower and finisher rations. Broilers should have feed that has between 22 -24 percent DCP.

The following guidelines can help the farmer to make the right feed at each stage of growth:

🐔🐓Preparing broiler growers feed (70 kg)

》10kg of whole maize
》16.7kg of maize germ
》13.3kg of wheat pollard
》10kg wheat bran
》6kg of cottonseed cake
》4.7kg of sunflower cake
》3kg of fishmeal
》2kg of lime
》3.4kg of soya meal
》40g of bone meal
》10g of grower PMX
》5g of salt
》5g of coccidiostat
》5g of Zinc bacitracin

🐔🐓Broiler starter feed (1-4 weeks)

》40kg of whole maize
》12kg of fishmeal (or Omena)
》14kg of soya bean meal
》4kg of lime
》70g of premix

Amino acids
》35g of lysine
》35g of Threonine

🐓🐔Formulating a 70 kg bag for Kienyeji/Indigenous/Village chicken (kienyeji mash formula).
》Whole maize = 34 kg
》Soya bean = 12 kg
》Omena = 8 kg
》Maize/wheat bran = 10 kg
》Lime = 6 kg

NOTE: For farmers who have more than 500 chickens it is advisable to make 1 tonne of feed at once (there are 14 bags of feed in one tonne). To make 1 tonne of feed, multiply each of the ingredients by 14.

Ensure that all the feed you make will last for one month and no longer – this ensures the feed remains fresh and safe for chickens. Any feed that lasts more than one month may deteriorate in quality and can affect your chickens.

Substituting Maize for other Grains
During some seasons, the price of maize or other grains goes up. In order to cut on costs, it is advisable to substitute maize for another grain. Maize and other grains e.g wheat, sorghum, oats primary function in feed formulations is to provide energy(carbohydrates).

The good thing is that these grains have nearly the same energy levels, so when substituting you can replace maize with another grain in the same quantity.

When substituting your chicken feed formulation ingredient, it is advisable to make a small batch, then test on a small number of birds. Observe their performance indices. The performance indices include weight gain and the number of eggs. If the performance drops, you can tweak your formulation until you attain the ideal performance.

GARLIC PRODUCTION.

Garlic likes full or partial sun. Most garlic growers recommend full sun; however, our garlic gets partial sun and does great. In really hot climates garlic may do better with afternoon shade to help shield garlic from the full heat of the day. We get full morning sun in our field which starts to shade around mid-afternoon (2 p.m. or later depending on the time of year). Interestingly, the garlic does better on the side of field with less sun but better soil!Prepare soil before planting garlic:

For the largest bulbs, prep your garlic bed well. Garlic loves a rich fertile loam soil or a silty loam soil. Our garlic grows in a beautiful silty loam soil. WARNING: Do not plant garlic in poorly draining soil; garlic cloves can rot if they sit in water or mud part of the winter.

Add organic matter: What if you don’t have the perfect soil? If you have sandy or clay soil add compost, humus, manure, or other organic matter to your soil and till or dig it in thoroughly. You can use all sorts of organic matter, even hay or dried grass clippings (make sure they are not treated with herbicides). One good option is to dig in weeds as green manure as long as the weeds don’t have seeds (you don’t want to accidently plant a weed bed).

Use green cover crop: You can also use a green cover crop (also called green manure) which is tilled into the soil in the fall. There are many options for cover crops such as peas, oats, buckwheat, sorghum, clover and more. The key is to select one that is right for your climate and for when it needs to grow. There are options for spring, summer, and fall planting. If you decide to use a cover crop you must kill the cover crop before it sets seed; otherwise you will have a weed problem. You can mow, cut or till down cover crops to prevent seed formation.

Add nitrogen if needed: If you use hay, straw, wood chips or similar materials you may need to add a little extra nitrogen to the soil. Organic substances can temporarily tie up nitrogen as they decompose which may leave less nitrogen for the garlic. After the organic matter decomposes it releases the nitrogen back into the soil (so you get it back later). Once organic matter breaks down it is known as humus. Humus helps soil maintain structure, improves nutrient uptake and retention, feeds nitrogen fixing bacteria, increases soil aeration, improves water holding capacity and helps prevent erosion.

How organic matter works: The organic matter will improve every soil type. Organic matter breaks up clay soils and allow better water penetration. It increases soil aggregate stability which holds soil particles together and helps soils retain their structure. Organic matter will help sandy soils retain moisture by increasing humus concentration and retain nutrients by improving cation exchange capacity. It also increases mineralization which is how much nitrogen, potassium, sulfur, phosphorus and other nutrients are released by soil bacteria. Organic matter makes compacted soils ‘fluffier’ and adds nutrients to poor soils.

In addition, garlic is a heavy feeder which means it likes lots of nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Adding organic matter for your crop to enjoy will give you the biggest and best tasting garlic. It will also supply most of the nutrients you need to grow great garlic.

Fluff soil: Don’t forget to fluff your soil! Garlic is a root crop so soil should be soft and fluffy on the top 12-18 inches. You should be able to easily push your hand into the soil. It is extremely important to have well draining soil. Garlic cloves can rot in the ground if planted in a poor draining area.

One study found that no till garlic had 32-44% bulb loss (Bratsch et al. 2005). Conventionally planted garlic has a very high success rate. We expect to get much less than a 5% bulb loss in our market varieties (we call them our production varieties).

Consider getting a soil test in your garlic plot:

After you amend and prepare your soil take the time to get a soil test. Soil tests will measure what nutrients are already in your soil when you plant. That way you can add fertilizer in the spring if you need to do so to grow healthy bulbs.

Prepare garlic bulbs:

Carefully separate each garlic bulb into individual cloves. Each clove will grow a new bulb of garlic. Be careful not to bruise the garlic with rough handling. Cuts and bruises could provide entry points for rot during the winter.

Plant garlic cloves:

Plant the garlic clove 4-6 inches deep. In areas with colder winters you should plant the garlic at least 5-6 inches deep and 4-8 inches apart. We space garlic 6 inches apart in rows, with rows 8 inches apart. You can make individual holes using a blunt handle (such as the end of a rake or shovel) or a bulb planter. You can also dig a trench 4-6 inches deep; lay in the garlic cloves and cover.

VERY IMPORTANT Garlic planting tip: make sure to plant the garlic right side up. The pointed end is the top side. This should be planted up. Garlic planted the wrong way will not grow as big or nice of a bulb. This is why all our garlic at Grey Duck Garlic is hand planted.

Mulch the garlic bed with compost, wood chips or hay. Mulching increases soil quality and nutrient availability for crops . Straw mulch increased yield and marketability in no-till garlic (Bretsch et al. 2005). Note: we don’t recommend no-till with garlic. Make sure that the hay is nice and fluffy or chopped up so that it lets some air through. You don’t want your garlic bed getting too wet or your garlic could rot.

Be careful of straw or hay mulches in wet climates or wet years. Heavy mulches may contribute to stem rot. In addition, straw from grain crops like wheat may carry stem rots that can transfer to garlic. If you notice signs of stem rot (browning or sliminess around the base of the plant), rake the mulch away from the garlic stalk. We have not noticed this problem with compost based mulches

We usually add nitrogen twice during the year to our garlic. We add blood meal directly after planting and side dress with blood meal either once or twice after garlic comes up in the spring. Do not add nitrogen after garlic begins to form a seedhead or scape. If it has too much nitrogen at that time it will grow leaves instead of a bulb! We do not need to add other fertilizers. Our soil is very high in other nutrients due to all the manure we add as an amendment.

You may need to add a complete fertilizer. One important nutrient is potassium which helps to grow large garlic bulbs. Add potassium to your soil if needed for growing those large garlic heads .

Ideally the garlic should start drying out in early summer. The bottom leaves will start to dry out and turn brown. Garlic is ready to harvest when only the top 4-5 green leaves are left. You don’t want to leave it in the soil too long or the bulb quality will start to deteriorate. Dig or gently pull your garlic (if the soil is soft it will be easier to pull up the bulbs). Do not remove the stems yet.

Garlic varieties normally mature in the following order (list is from earliest to latest maturing): Tuban,Asiatic, Artichoke, Rocambole, Creole, Glazed Purple Stripe, Purple Stripe, Marbled Purple Stripe, Porcelain, and Silverskin. However, smaller plants will normally mature earlier than larger plants. If you grow different varieties, you may have a difference of 3-4 weeks or more between the earliest and latest varieties.
A word on watering:

Hardneck garlic is ideally suited for dry climates; most garlic will do fine on 12-14 inches of rain during the growing season. Grey Duck Garlic grows dryland garlic which means we don’t water our garlic. However, you may want to water in the spring or early summer if it is really dry. Don’t keep the soil constantly moist or you risk garlic rot.

SUMMER

Garlic scapes:

Hardneck garlic forms scapes or “seedheads” in early summer. Scapes are composed of small bulblets which can grow more garlic. Scapes can be harvested to eat, left on the plant to mature or removed. Some people believe that removing the scapes makes the bulbs grow bigger. Studies show that if garlic is under any stress removing the scapes will result in bigger garlic bulbs.

If the soil is soft garlic can be pulled by hand. Warning: when the soil is harder, digging is required or the garlic may break off in the soil. Dig far enough away from the plant to avoid cutting your garlic bulbs. We know from sad experience that it is always the biggest bulbs that get nicked by the shovel (and nobody wants to see a grown garlic grower cry)!

Curing garlic bulbs:

Hardneck garlic cannot be braided to store; the stems are hard. Cure the garlic bulbs by storing in a cool dry area with good air movement for 4-6 weeks. Some people hang garlic, we dry it on racks. Bulbs can be eaten ‘raw’ but will have a more mellow flavor and will store longer after curing (the bulbs you receive from Grey Duck Garlic are already cured). Once the stems are dry you can clip off the bulb and store in a dry airy place. We enjoy using both the raw and the cured bulbs in cooking.

Garlic Bulb Storage:

Storage length of garlic depends on your storage conditions. For the longest storage time, place garlic in a cool (50-65ºF) dry area such as an unheated room. Do not store garlic in plastic or air tight containers or garlic will mold, rot or try to grow. Garlic will sprout if exposed to prolonged temperatures below 45ºF.

GROWING POTATOES IN BAGS/SACKS.

Potatoes can grow almost anywhere, even with limited space. You can grow them in reusable potato growbags or sacks(mumasaka) which you can find anywhere. These are easy to place on a balcony, patio, greenhouse or just in your backyard. What’s more, they make harvesting pretty easy!

What you need to grow potatoes in bags

Your choice of seed is very important especially if you’re growing potatoes for the first time. It’s best to plant an early varieties such as Duke of York, Homeguard or Orla because you can harvest them earlier than maincrop varieties, giving you a better yield.
Use a good multi-purpose compost or a mixture of 60 compost to 40 topsoil (avoid manure). You can also use fertilizer but this is optional. However, for is maximum yield, it’s recommended. To start with, choose an area with at least 6 hrs of direct sun per day to place your potato bags/sacks/planter in. Make sure the containers you are using have good drainage.

Most potatoes should be planted between November to February. However, with a good water supply, they can planted at anytime of the year while avoiding the colder months.

Chit the potatoes (sprout seed potatoes before planting) to produce sturdy shoots. This encourages faster establishment and helps them grow better. You can chit by leaving the seed in an open egg tray about 4 weeks allowing them to sprout. The place should be cool and have light to prevent rotting.
Keep a eye on the potatoes and place them so that the parts with the most ‘eyes’ face upwards. The potato’s eyes are the small buds in the skin where the new shoots sprout from.

Planting

Fill the bags to about 20cm with your mixture of top soil/compost or multi-purpose compost. Then, spread 3 or 4 seed potatoes evenly on top of the compost and layer with another 10cm of compost mix.

When the plants start growing, gently cover the shoots with more of the compost mix until it reaches just below the top of the bag/sack. Don’t forget to keep the compost moist but not soggy. However, when the temperature is high, you can water heavily than lightly because the water has to go down to the lower roots. Keep an eye out for pests, especially chewing insects which can affect the vigor of your plants. Occasionally dig up a small tuber and check for any damage to the young potato. If you use clean new compost, you won’t have any major soil borne insect problems.

Give your potatoes a feed which has a high potash content. This substantially increases the potato yield. Avoid using feeds with a high nitrogen content because this encourages the growth of excess leaves at the expense of the potato crop. Potato blight can rear it’s ugly head during humid periods. Therefore, it’s better to avoid recycling compost. Also, buy certified seed rather than planting old potatoes to help prevent blight infection and other diseases. As already mentioned, grow early varietiesor look for blight resistant seed potatoes such as Sarpo Mira, Setanta or Orla. Please check with your local seed supplier.

Harvesting your bag potatoes

You will know they are ready to harvest when the flowers start to bloom for a couple of weeks. You can test to see if they are at the size you want by gently removing some of the topsoil and having a look. Leave them to grow to maturity and pick when ready.

You have to harvest early potato varieties as they are needed because they don’t store very well. You can leave maincrop varieties in the bags for longer periods as long as the bags are in well ventilated areas.

Once you harvest, store the potatoes in hessian bags or in sand in a cool environment. Avoid storing potatoes in polythene bags because they’ll ‘sweat’ and rot. Also, check your harvested potatoes occasionally for signs of rot, and if you find any, remove them so that they don’t infect the other potatoes.

10 Challenges & Problems of Starting a Business + Lessons I Learned.

What are the major challenges entrepreneurs face when starting a small business from scratch? How do successful entrepreneurs and drop out billionaires handle and solve problems in business? Must an entrepreneur face these business challenges when starting a business?

“Starting a business is like jumping out of an airplane without a parachute. In mid air, the entrepreneur begins building a parachute and hopes it opens before hitting the ground.” – Rich Dad

If any of the above questions is currently running through your entrepreneurial mind, then I will advice you read on as I trash out the top 10 challenges you will face when starting a business from scratch.

“Without the element of uncertainty, the bringing off of even, the greatest business triumph would be dull, routine and eminently unsatisfying.” – J. Paul Getty

If you are an entrepreneur, then I believe you will be familiar with the challenges associated with the entrepreneurial process of building a business from scratch. But if not, and you dream of becoming one someday; then I think you will find this article worthwhile.

“A business has to be involving, it has to be fun and it has to exercise your creative instincts.” – Richard Branson

I am writing this piece to enable aspiring entrepreneurs prepare in advance for challenges involved with the entrepreneurial process. Please it’s never my intention to discourage or scare you from going into business; In fact, I intend to achieve the opposite. I want you to venture into the business world and start your own business with a feeling of confidence.

“He that is prepared has half won the battle.” – Chinese Proverb

“The biggest challenge you have is to challenge your own self doubt and your laziness. It is your self doubt and your laziness that defines and limit who you are.” – Rich Dad

10 Challenges & Problems of Starting a Business from Scratch

1. Developing the Vision and Business Idea.

“To have a great idea, have a lot of them.” – Thomas Edison

Developing a business idea is usually the first challenge faced by every entrepreneur when starting a business from scratch. Finding the right business opportunity or creatively developing an idea is certainly not an easy task. I call “Envisioning the idea” the first true task of an entrepreneur. As an entrepreneur, you must possess the ability to see what others cannot see. While others see problems, you must see opportunities.

“There is far more opportunity than there is ability.” – Thomas Edison

But seeing opportunities is just the beginning. The main business challenge is going to be your ability to forge that opportunity into a business idea. I see this as a business challenge because the process of transforming problems into business opportunities is like trying to turn lead into gold. I call it the entrepreneurial process of “Creating Value out of nothing”; a process that brings innovative products into existence. Below is an illustration of how the process goes.

  • Identifying a problem > Seeing an opportunity in the problem > Coming up with a solution > Forging the opportunity into a business idea > Integrating your solution into a business plan

“A good businessman must have nose for business the same way a journalist has nose for news. Once your eyes, ears, nose, heart and brain are trained on business, you sniff business opportunities everywhere. In places where people see a lot of obstacles, I see a lot of opportunities.

At times, there is something instinctive in me that tell me a business opportunity exist even at a place where others see nothing. That is what makes me different, maybe unique. A good businessman sees where others don’t see. What I see, you may not see. You cannot see because that is the secret of the business… the entire world is a big market waiting for anybody who knows the rules of the game.” – Orji Uzor Kalu

Developing a vision is definitely a business challenge because an entrepreneur must sometimes assume the role of a sorcerer. Let me explain in detail. Most individuals are comfortable with the present way of doing things but it is the duty of an entrepreneur to envision and forecast the future.

An entrepreneur must always be ahead of his time or else he will lose his relevance. It is the duty of an entrepreneur to bring into present what is yet to be. It is also the duty of an entrepreneur to bring solutions to other people’s problems. Let me give you some practical illustrations:

“If you want to be rich, you need to develop your vision. You must be standing on the edge of time gazing into the future.” – Rich Dad

a)  In the late 70s and early 80s, while IBM saw increase in demand for their mainframe computers, Steve Jobs envisioned a personal computer in every home and Bill Gates envisioned the need for easy to use software for personal computers. That single vision made Bill Gates the richest man in the world and Steve Jobs the most famous business person of the 21st century.

“Business is going to change in the next ten years than it has in the last fifty years.” – Bill Gates

b)  The Wright brothers envisioned a flying machine but they were massively opposed because the thought of humans flying was perceived as impossible. Today, the Airplane is a reality.

c)  Back in those days when cars were custom made and exclusively for the rich, Henry Ford envisioned affordable cars for the masses. That single vision made Henry Ford one of the richest men in history.

“You are nuts and you should be proud of it. Stick with what you believe in.” – Trip Hawkins

I believe with these few examples, my point is clear. Developing the vision and idea is the first true task and challenge of being an entrepreneur.

2. Raising Capital for your Startup

After developing your idea, the next challenge you are going to face when starting a business from scratch is that of raising capital. As an entrepreneur, you are the only one that knows business your idea to the core. You are the only one that knows the story of your future.

“Capital can do nothing without brains to direct it.” – J. Ogden Armour

Trying to convince investors about something that doesn’t exist is definitely a challenge. Trying to make them understand that you are trustworthy and equal to the task is not child’s play especially when you are building your first business.

“If you want to know the value of money, go and try to borrow some.” – Benjamin Franklin

There is more to raising capital than just simply asking for money. Most investors want to invest in already established businesses with minimal risk and they want to be sure that they get returns for the risk they took. Most brilliant business ideas never scale through the venture capital stage because the entrepreneur is either not prepared or lacks what it takes to raise the needed capital. Just as my mentor, Robert Kiyosaki says:

“The world is filled with brilliant ideas and excellent products but the world lacks seasoned entrepreneurs.” – Robert Kiyosaki

To overcome the challenge of raising capital, you must develop the ability to sell your idea and vision to potential investors. When I say “sell your ideas“, I mean improving your communication skill and your manner of presentation. In the game of raising capital, you must have a good story to tell; backed by a strong business plan and good persuasion skills. You must know how to pitch angel investors and venture capitalists alike.

“The ability to sell is the number one skill in business. If you cannot sell, don’t bother thinking about becoming a business owner.” – Rich Dad

3. Assembling a Business Team

“Eagles don’t flock, you have to find them one at a time.” – Henry Ross Perot

The third business challenge you will face in the course of starting a small business from scratch is assembling the right business management team. When I talk about a team, I am not talking about regular employees. I am talking about a “strategic round table business team” that will meet regularly to brainstorm on ways to grow your business.

“Individuals don’t win in business, teams do.” – Sam Walton

The process of building a business team starts even before the issue of raising initial start-up capital arises. Remember I said that most brilliant ideas never scale through the phase of raising venture capital. Well; this is where most budding entrepreneurs miss it. Most brilliant ideas and products never get funded because the entrepreneur is trying to raise capital as an individual. A business team is a vital, yet often ignored key to raising venture capital successfully.

“Business and investing are team sports.” – Rich Dad

As an entrepreneur, you are bound to have strengths and weaknesses. That is the more reason you need a business team to cover up or compliment your weaknesses. A team is a necessity for building a successful business. Now finding a business team is just the second hurdle, transferring your passion and vision to your team is the next piece of cake.

“Teams should be able to act with the same unity of purpose and focus as a well motivated individual.” – Bill Gates

It’s your duty as an entrepreneur to make sure your team sees the future you see. They must believe in your possibilities and must also be passionate about making that possibility a reality. If they can’t grasp your vision, if they can’t see the future with you, then they are not worthy being your team.

“My model for business is the Beatles. They were four guys that kept each other’s negative tendencies in check; they balanced each other. And the total was greater than the sum of the parts. Great things in business are not done by one person; they are done by a team of people.” – Steve Jobs

Your strategic business team should comprise your banker, financial adviser, accountant, attorney or legal adviser and any other specialist that will be of tremendous impact to your business. A question on your mind right now might be “how am I going to pay this team” My answer is I don’t know. You will have to figure it out yourself or better still, you can consider bringing them on board as partners.

“Go to the wolf, consider its ways and be wise. A wolf will never hunt alone; it hunts in packs because it knows the power of team work.” – Ajaero Tony Martins

4. Finding the Right Business Location

Is finding a good location a business challenge? I don’t know but what I do know is that finding a good business location at the right price is definitely not easy. How do you get a location that has a rapidly growing population, good road network and other amenities at a good price? Well, you will have to figure out yourself.

5. Finding Good Employees

“If you own a butcher shop, don’t hire vegetarians. To hire the right people, you have to let the wrong people go.” – Rich Dad

Most writers and managers crank up the process of finding good employees as an easy task. They define the process of finding an employee as simply presenting the job description and the right employee will surface. But I think it’s more than that.

“The competition to hire the best will increase in the years ahead. Companies that give extra flexibility to their employees will have the edge in this area.” – Bill Gates

Business owners know how difficult it is to find a hardworking, trustworthy employee. Most employees want to work less and get paid more. Finding a good employee who will be passionate about delivering his or her services is quite difficult. Finding good employees is a minor task compared to the business challenge of forging your hired employees into a team.

You may have great employees but if they can’t act as a team, they are worthless and will yield nothing but stagnation. A football team may have great skillful players but if they fail to play as a team, their possessed skill is useless.

“Bringing together the right information with the right people will dramatically improve a company’s ability to develop and act on strategic business opportunities.” – Bill Gates

Employees are your representatives to your customers and the outside world. They are a reflection of your business culture and ethics. If an employee of yours is bad or rude to your customers, it is going to portray a bad image for your company. So you must be careful when hiring employees. Remember the golden rule of business; “Hire slow and fire fast.

6. Finding Good Customers

The sixth challenge you will face in the process of starting a small business from scratch is finding good customers. Note the keyword “good customers.” In the process of building a business, you will come to find out that there are good customers as well as bad customers.

You must be on guard for bad customers. Good customers are really hard to find. A good customer will be loyal to your company and will be willing to forgive you if you make a mistake and apologize. A good customer will try to do the right thing that will benefit both himself and your company mutually.

“Thank God for my customers. They buy my products before they are perfected.” – Henry Ford

Bad customers will always look for loopholes in the company’s policy to exploit and make a few gains. Bad customers will always try to exploit the company’s goodwill and look for ways to rip off the company. Bad customers are responsible for bad debts.

Good customers build your business and bad customers will always try to liquidate your business. Just as you fire employees, you must also be prepared to fire bad customers without hesitation. Remember the story of the customer that sued McDonald’s claiming the coffee was too hot.

“You must fire bad customers just as you would fire a bad employee. If you do not get rid of your bad employees, the good employees will leave. If I do not fire bad customers, not only will my good customers leave but many of my good employees will leave as well.” – Rich Dad

7. Dealing with Competition

“In business, the competition will bite you if you keep running. If you stand still, they will swallow you.” – Victor Kiam

Competition is the next challenge you will face when starting a business. Most individuals see competition as a plague but I see competition as a good challenge. I see competition as a benchmark for creativity, the main engine that stimulates innovation and production of quality products at great prices. Without competition, there will be no innovation and without innovation, the world will be stagnant.

“If you don’t have a competitive advantage, don’t compete.” – Jack Welch

I see competition as a welcomed challenge and I want you to do the same. Competition keeps us on our toes and drives us to constantly improve our products and services. But you must be warned. Competition can make your business lose its relevance in the eye of your customers so you must always be on guard.

“The competitor to be feared is one who never bothers about you at all but goes on making his own business better all the time.” – Henry Ford

8. Unforeseen Business Challenges and Expenses

“Smooth seas seldom make good sailors.” – Anonymous

Just as a sailor prepares for unexpected storm, just as a pilot is always on the watch for unpredictable bad weather and thunderstorms, so must an entrepreneur prepared for whatever comes. Unexpected challenges can come in the form of:

  • Unexpected law suits
  • Inconsistent government policy
  • Not being able to make payroll
  • Unpaid bills and taxes
  • Unexpected resignation of staff from sensitive office
  • Bad debts from customers
  • Loss of market share
  • Dwindling working capital
  • Inadequate stock or inventory

“A company’s ability to respond to an unplanned event, good or bad is a prime indicator of its ability to compete.” – Bill Gates

These business challenges, if not handled properly can ruin your plan to build a successful business. Another challenge you must expect is an unforeseen increase in business expenses. If not handled properly, it might result in constant negative cash flow and eventually; business failure.

9. Keeping Up With Industrial Changes and Trends

“In three years, every product my company makes will be obsolete. The only question is whether we will make them obsolete or somebody else will.” – Bill Gates

Change in trends is a challenge you must be prepared for when starting a small business. Trends have made and broken lot of businesses. I know a lot of profitable businesses that have been wiped out by slight industrial changes and trends. A typical example is the Dot com trend, where many established industrial based businesses were wiped out by new web based dot com companies.

“How fast a company can respond in an emergency is a measure of its corporate reflexes.” – Bill Gates

When the Dot com era began, business owners were left with only two options. Either they join the dot com train or they get crushed by the dot com train. Seasoned entrepreneurs know that trend is a friend and are always willing to swiftly adjust their business to the current trend. Keeping your eyes open to spot trends is really a challenge but the big task will be your ability to quickly use the trend to your advantage.

10. Exiting the Business

“In the world of business and investing, your exit is more important than your entry. A good thumb of rule is this; exit before you enter.” – Robert Kiyosaki

When building a business from scratch, you are going to face the challenge of determining your exit strategy. Just as the quote above states, you have to plan your exit strategy before you even start the business. Most entrepreneurs run their business without any plans to exit and even if they have an exit strategy, they find it difficult to implement it.

“Always start at the end before you begin. Professional investors always have an exit strategy before they invest. Knowing your exit strategy is an important investment fundamental.” – Rich Dad

Before starting a business, it is advisable to plan an exit. Lack of an exit plan is the primary reason why most businesses crumble after the death of the founder. An exit strategy is very important to the long term survival of a business.

now how do you plan an exit strategy? There are benchmarks you can use to determine your exit from any business. Most smart entrepreneurs will use a certain benchmark as a target and once this specific target is reached, they exit the business. Examples of such benchmarks are:

  • Annual sales
  • Annual Turnover
  • Asset Base
  • Market Saturation
  • Customer base, subscribers or number of users

Now when it comes to exiting a business, there are three strategies you can apply. You can choose to exit a business in any of the following ways:

a) Turning over the business to professional managers

When your business reaches a certain stage of maturity, you can exit by turning it over to professional managers. In this case, the business still belongs to you but you are not involved with its day to day affairs. You will have to give up administrative role to assume the role of a watchdog. When you exit in this manner, you will have more free time to look at other projects or retire.

b) Selling the business privately

In this case, you are exiting the business by selling it to a private investor. In the business world, it is called M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions). Exiting your business this way means that after the sale and transfer of assets is complete, you have nothing to do with the business again.

c) Taking the company public

The unique thing about this type of exit strategy is that while you are selling your business (in form of shares) to public investors, you still maintain control over the business. Please before you apply any of these exit strategy, I will advise you consult with your attorney or legal adviser. But ultimately, it’s up to you to decide the exit strategy you want to apply; but always remember “your exit is more important than your entry.

As a final note, I want to state clearly that challenges come only to make you stronger; so don’t faint in the face of challenges. Stand tall; keep moving your business forward and I will see you at the top.

How I Overcame My Business Challenges

When you are successful, everyone wants to associate with you. But nobody gives a damn about the process you went through to achieve such success. Everyday, I keep receiving accolades with respect to my achievements; yet deep down inside of me, I know success is not what it’s painted to be.

This piece is about a recent business challenge I encountered, how I solved it and the lessons I learned from the experience. I am writing this for those who are currently experiencing hard times in business and life in general. I want you to know that you are not alone. As you read, I hope you learn and profit from my experience.

Sometimes, challenges or problems come so fast that you lose your grip. Regardless of your financial or social status; you will never be free from problems. I get my own fair share of problems everyday but just recently; I was hit by a massive setback.

The period April to July 2011 was one of the toughest in my life. I was practically running on adrenaline and living on edge within these four months. Now you may want to know what transpired within these four months but I think this should be a story for another day. However, I will give you a brief insight of what I faced recently, how I overcame and the lessons I learned. So if you are still eager to profit from my experience and foolishness, then read on.

In the month of April 2011, I was robbed at gun point and it took me some weeks to overcome the trauma. In the month of May, my business suffered a major setback and in June; my bank placed a hold on our business account (meaning we can’t make withdrawals from the account) due to some differences that needed to be reconciled.

My business suffered a major cash flow crisis as a result of this single action the bank took, so I resorted to borrowing cash from family and friends to keep my business afloat. By July, I was deeply in debt. Within this period, I was always on the go; shuttling from one state of Nigeria to another; just to resolve the problem I was encountering.

Now let’s fast forward to this day; the third day of August 2011. As I write this now, I can’t really tell how I feel. All I just want to say is this; “I survived.” As at today, I have cleared all outstanding debt I incurred within the hard times, my bank account has been restored and my business has roared back to life. But it took me and my team, 90 days of untold stress to bring things back to order.

Now how did i survive this trying period? How did i stay afloat? How did i keep my body and soul together? You will find out below

a. I sustained my business cash flow

Cash flow is the life blood of business and when it begins to trend in the negative, it will only be a matter of time before your business collapses. When I resorted to borrowing cash from family and friends; I was only trying to keep my cash flow position positive, I had to make sure the daily operations of my business continues unhindered and this also implied that I had to make some cut on our daily expenses.

b. I took responsibility

When the problem began, I had every right to point a finger to any member of my business team and say; “it’s your fault.” After all, i am the boss. But I didn’t do it. I did not run into a hole and hide; rather, I placed myself in front of my team.

I told them that a mistake has been made and I was not interested in trading blames at that moment; all I needed was a solution and my team responded positively. They thought I was going to axe someone but I didn’t. Rather, I preached the need to jointly assume responsibility and resolve the mess together; with me as the lead dog.

c. I engaged in critical thinking

I have said it in previous articles that critical thinking is a key to effective problem solving. In the midst of the ensuring tension, I still found time to think in solitude. In fact, I spent most of my free time alone to the extent that my dad became concerned over my health and began counseling me to take things easy.

But I laughed him off and quietly explained to him that I wasn’t worrying, I was thinking. At this point, I want to make it clear that there’s a big difference between thinking and worrying. Thinking solve problems but worrying compounds a problem and may even get you killed. My dad probably never understood the difference.

 d. I tackled the problem head-on

What do you do in the face of problems? Do you face them squarely or you run and hide? Well, I know from experience that people react differently in the face of problems. Some even ignore the problem as if it doesn’t exist. But to pull myself and business out of the mess, I knew I had to tackle the problem head-on and I did.

Challenges of Starting a Business – 6 Lessons I Learned from My Personal Experience

I. Integrity can be a life saver

The bible said that “a good name is better than precious ornament” and that’s definitely true. When I went to borrow money for my business from family and friends; none requested a collateral or interest, none blinked an eyelid before granting my request.

But they made it clear to me that they were lending me their money based on my reputation of always keeping to my words. When I heard this; I was humbled and I strived to make sure I didn’t disappoint. Always make sure you preserve your integrity; it can be a life saver in hard times.

Never make empty promises and when you eventually make a promise; keep to your words. I have seen entrepreneurs raise millions and even billions of dollars easily; just because they have a reputation of delivering on their words. If you want to achieve much in business; preserve the integrity of your name.

II. Do what you must today; not tomorrow

Most people are fond of procrastinating; I am also guilty of such and in fact, procrastination was one of the reasons our business got in trouble. So whatever you have to do today; do it. Don’t wait till tomorrow because it might be too late. Don’t wait till you are under pressure before you act.

III. When challenges hit you; don’t break

Challenges are part of life; they come to make you stronger only if you refuse to bow. When challenges hit you; don’t break. Rather, toughen up. Just like a famous politician said; “when vultures surround you, refuse to die.

IV. Never lose focus

One of the greatest mistakes you will make in times of hardship is to take your eyes off your goal. No matter how bad the situation is, never lose focus.

V. When all human effort fails; turn to God

Yes, God works and he answers prayers. I had a good experience of this during the hard time. I remember going to the bank to meet with my banker. As I discussed with my banker, I was lost in thought. I wasn’t interested in the sermon and big words he was spitting out; all I wanted was a solution and just when I thought a solution was forthcoming, my banker said “I am sorry Mr. Ajaero; we still can’t allow your company make withdrawal from the accounts.

Those words hit me like thunderbolt. My business was on the brink of collapsing and here was this smart looking guy telling me I can’t access my money. As I bow my head lost in thought, I noticed someone by my side. I turned and it was a man.

He must have heard my banker saying those last words, he asked what the problem was and I told him. He asked me to see him in his office the next day and he gave me the office address. I went home that day crying to God for a solution; I couldn’t sleep that night as I kept praying asking God to come to my rescue.

When I got to the man’s office the next day, he simply signed a document; handed it over to me and said goodbye. No introduction, no cross questioning. This man don’t even bother to know the name or identity of who he was helping.

I was really surprised that someone I don’t know from Adam would help me with such a sensitive problem with no strings attached. Well, some will attribute such action to luck but I will say it’s God at work. So when it seems all hope is not, never forget to cry to God for help. He will surely make a way for you.

VI. Always be prepared for the worst

This is the final lesson I learned from the whole scenario; always be prepared for the worst. Challenges and problems will never stop coming no matter how successful you are. Even though I have solved this particular problem, I know bigger problems are still lying ahead of me. Instead of praying never to encounter challenges; the question I constantly ask myself is “how prepared am I to handle the next challenged?

I know you can never be too prepared for what’s ahead since you can’t predict what is to come; but at least, I believe that he who is prepared has half won the battle. Now how can you prepare for what is to come? A good way to start is to keep aside a certain amount of cash specifically for emergency purposes.

As a final note, I want to say that I am happy to be writing this now. Call it my survival write up and you won’t be wrong. It’s not easy being at the helm of affairs; it’s not easy being a business leader. This single incident made me wonder the amount of pressure top business leaders and CEOs go through during challenging periods. Well, like I said earlier; all problems will surely come to pass. The real bone of contention is whether you will survive or not.

How to Quit your Job and Start a Business.

Want to quit your job and start a new business? Well, here is how you can accomplish this feat. One of the most frightening days of your life is when you are about to quit your job for what you really have passion for. Quitting your job is really a very difficult decision to make.

cYou are not really sure how your employer is going to feel after seeing your resignation letter, neither are you sure of what is going to happen to you when you quit. Believe me, you would go broke a thousand times but it is for the best. All those allowances, free medical check-ups, gift cards that your company gives will be a thing of the past.  There would be no more paychecks, health insurance or even retirement plans.

But it is a wise decision you have made though by quitting your job and starting a business to become your own boss. Be sure that you are ready to quit before you do. Most people who are scared of quitting start a business and devote some hours after working hours and also during weekends. Have you ever asked yourself why people love to work for big companies?

Have you ever asked yourself why people quit their jobs? Don’t let the motive behind quitting your job be because every other person around you is quitting. Mostly it is the fear of not having a steady income that holds people back from quitting their jobs to start a business. If you want to quit your job and start a business then this article is for you.

Work On Your Business Ideas.

How do I work on my business ideas? Before quitting, work on your business ideas and ask yourself if your business is a viable one. Your family and friends would come in handy here, asking what they think would really help. You never can tell they might have a friend or a colleague who might put you through or give you some very good advice. Some family or friends wouldn’t want to break your heart by telling you the business isn’t a viable one. Telling them a friend of yours is about to venture into the business is a better way of receiving an honest feedback from them. You should do a lot of research about your business so as to be sure the business you are about to venture into will be a profitable one and you are ready to take the risk.

You don’t want to end up going back to your employer after you quit, do you? This has happened to a lot of people. Getting your business plan ready and jotting down important things that will help your business, will go a long way in making your business a success. You are saying no to paychecks, health insurance and paid vacations. You don’t want to be doing all these for nothing. Work on your business, not in it.

Go for a Medical Check-Up

Knowing the state of your health is very important before quitting your job. Starting a business is not all that easy, and managing it is very strenuous. You can take advantage of your company’s medical plans to diagnose and solve any health problems while you still can. Once you are out, you might not have the luxury of paying for medical bills as this might drain your purse, and remember you won’t be receiving any stable income for a while.

Financial Stability

Ensure you are not broke when you quit your job because you wouldn’t be receiving any paychecks for a while, it would be just you and your job. This is where your savings come to your rescue. When you are still employed, ensure you have attained some level of financial stability. The major reason why start-ups end up closing their business is often as a result of lack of funds. It wouldn’t speak well of you to open your business and shut it down in less than 6 months. You don’t want to be called a failure or a looser, do you? Automatically funneling money into an account that is not linked to your regular savings and withdrawals while still employed would help you be financially okay when you quit your job. Keep in mind that lack of money is a business killer.

Line Up Your Prospects

After the decision about quitting your job has been made, lining up your prospects should be the next thing on your agenda. You have to focus and give yourself a direction. Ask yourself very often where you are heading, this way you are sure to get an answer and the earlier you know where you are headed, the better. You can make reaching out to people a regular practice as this will help you a lot. Your business is sure to be a success when you have lined up prospects, although there are other things that make one’s business a success.

Getting accustomed to being on a schedule is also very important while you are still employed because you would be doing more of this when you start your business. If you don’t know to manage your time, starting a business would be a bit difficult; although one out of ten people who were very poor in time management were able to push through. You can learn anything only if you put your mind and soul into it. So many entrepreneurs today who had to take the risk of quitting their jobs to become their own bosses went through a lot. Be sure you are ready for this before you quit.

Am I taking the right decision? Ask yourself this question a thousand times to ensure you are on the right path. Talk to people who also had to quit their jobs to startup their businesses. Ask them what it takes to manage a business. Ask questions and seek advice from them. Before quitting make sure you have something motivating you. Don’t start a business because you watched a TV series that says quitting your job for a business is the best thing to do, neither should you start because you just want to do what you love doing. Very often it is not what we love to do that we end up doing. Discover what motivates you for this would help when you are fed up and almost about to give up.

After you might have submitted your resignation letter to start a business. You won’t be receiving any pay checks for a while. You need find another means of income which can sustain you and your business. Enrolling as a freelancer in any freelancing site is an option. The money you earned through this source would be used to pay your bills and also to invest in your business. You would also want to be cut down on your expenses because your income may likely be lesser than working a stable 8-6.

Starting a business is not really hard, managing it is. If you can read through this article and put what is been said into use, your business is sure to be a success. Read wide to get wide exposure and also to catch a glimpse of what you are about getting into. You must be so sure you are ready to quit your business to avoid regrets later in the future. The sky is just the beginning.

Best Diet Tips Ever – 22 Ways to Stay on Track.

Tip No. 1: Drink plenty of water or other calorie-free beverages.

Before you tear into that bag of potato chips, drink a glass of water first. People sometimes confuse thirst with hunger, so you can end up eating extra calories when an ice-cold glass of water is really all you needed. If plain water doesn’t cut it, try drinking flavored sparkling water or brewing a cup of fruit-infused herbal tea.

Tip No. 2: Be choosy about nighttime snacks.

Mindless eating occurs most frequently after dinner, when you finally sit down and relax. Snacking in front of the TV is one of the easiest ways to throw your diet off course. Either close down the kitchen after a certain hour, or allow yourself a low-calorie snack, like a 100-calorie pack of cookies or a half-cup scoop of low-fat ice cream.

Tip No. 3: Enjoy your favorite foods.

Instead of cutting out your favorite foods altogether, be a slim shopper. Buy one fresh bakery cookie instead of a box, or a small portion of candy from the bulk bins instead of a whole bag. You can still enjoy your favorite foods — the key is moderation.

Tip No. 4: Eat several mini-meals during the day.

If you eat fewer calories than you burn, you’ll lose weight. But when you’re hungry all the time, eating fewer calories can be a challenge. “Studies show people who eat 4-5 meals or snacks per day are better able to control their appetite and weight,” says obesity researcher Rebecca Reeves, DrPH, RD. She recommends dividing your daily calories into smaller meals or snacks and enjoying most of them earlier in the day — dinner should be the last time you eat.

Tip No. 5: Eat protein at every meal.

Protein is the ultimate fill-me-up food — it’s more satisfying than carbs or fats and keeps you feeling full for longer. It also helps preserve muscle mass and encourages fat burning. So be sure to incorporate healthy proteins like seafood, lean meat, egg whites, yogurt, cheese, soy, nuts, or beans into your meals and snacks.

Tip No. 6: Spice it up.

6/22

Add spices or chilies to your food for a flavor boost that can help you feel satisfied. “Food that is loaded with flavor will stimulate your taste buds and be more satisfying, so you won’t eat as much,” says American Dietetic Association spokeswoman Malena Perdomo, RD. When you need something sweet, suck on a red-hot fireball candy. It’s sweet, spicy, and low in calories.

Tip No. 7: Stock your kitchen with healthy, convenient foods.

Having ready-to-eat snacks and meals-in-minutes on hand sets you up for success. You’ll be less likely to hit the drive-through or order a pizza if you can throw together a healthy meal in five or 10 minutes. Here are some essentials to keep on hand: frozen vegetables, whole-grain pasta, reduced-fat cheese, canned tomatoes, canned beans, pre-cooked grilled chicken breast, whole grain tortillas or pitas, and bags of salad greens.

Tip No. 8: Order children’s portions at restaurants.

8/22

Ordering a child-size entree is a great way to cut calories and keep your portions reasonable. This has become such a popular trend that most servers won’t bat an eye when you order off the kids’ menu. Another trick is to use smaller plates. This helps the portions look like more, and if your mind is satisfied, your stomach likely will be, too.

Tip No. 9: Swap a cup of pasta for a cup of vegetables.

Simply by eating less pasta or bread and more veggies, you could lose a dress or pants size in a year. “You can save from 100-200 calories if you reduce the portion of starch on your plate and increase the amount of vegetables,” says Cynthia Sass, RD, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Tip No. 10: Always eat breakfast.

It seems like an easy diet win: Skip breakfast and you’ll lose weight. Yet many studies show the opposite can be true. Not eating breakfast can make you hungry later, leading to too much nibbling and binge eating at lunch and dinner. To lose weight — and keep it off — always make time for a healthy morning meal, like high-fiber cereal, low-fat milk, and fruit.

Tip No. 11: Include fiber in your diet.

11/22

Fiber aids digestion, prevents constipation, and lowers cholesterol — and can help with weight loss. Most Americans get only half the fiber they need. To reap fiber’s benefits, most women should get about 25 grams daily, while men need about 38 grams — or 14 grams per 1,000 calories. Good fiber sources include oatmeal, beans, whole grain foods, nuts, and most fruits and vegetables.

Tip No. 12: Clean the cupboards of fattening foods.

If you have chips in the pantry and ice cream in the freezer, you’re making weight loss harder than it has to be. Reduce temptation by purging the cupboards of fattening foods. Want an occasional treat? Make sure you have to leave the house to get it — preferably by walking.

Tip No. 13: Lose weight slowly.

If you’re losing weight but not as fast as you’d like, don’t get discouraged. Dropping pounds takes time, just like gaining them did. Experts suggest setting a realistic weight loss goal of about one to two pounds a week. If you set your expectations too high, you may give up when you don’t lose weight fast enough. Remember, you start seeing health benefits when you’ve lost just 5%-10% of your body weight.

Tip No. 14: Weigh yourself once a week.

People who weigh themselves regularly tend to have more weight loss success. But most experts suggest weighing yourself only once a week, so you’re not derailed by daily fluctuations. When you weigh yourself, follow these tips: Weigh yourself at the same time of day, on the same day of the week, on the same scale, and in the same clothes.

Tip No. 15: Get enough sleep.

When you’re sleep deprived, your body overproduces the appetite-stimulating hormone ghrelin but under-produces the hormone leptin, which tells you when you’re full. Getting enough sleep may make you feel rested and full and keep you from doing unnecessary snacking.

Tip No. 16: Understand portion sizes.

We’re so used to super-sizing when we eat out that it’s easy to carry that mind-set home. To right-size your diet, use a kitchen scale and measuring cups to measure your meals for a week or two. Use smaller plates and glasses to downsize your portions. Split restaurant servings in half — making two meals out of one big one. Portion out snack servings instead of eating them directly from the container.

Tip No. 17: Eat more fruits and vegetables.

17/22

The best “diet” is one where you get to eat more food, not less. If you eat more fruits and vegetables, you shouldn’t feel as hungry because these nutrient-rich foods are also high in fiber and water, which can give you a feeling of fullness. Snacking can be a good thing as long as you choose smart snacks.

Tip No. 18: Limit alcohol to weekends.

Alcohol contains empty calories: a five-ounce glass of wine has 125, a bottle of beer about 153. Because our bodies don’t require those calories, they can get converted into fat. If you enjoy an occasional drink, consider a compromise. Enjoy your favorite alcoholic beverage on weekends only, with just one drink for women per day, two for men.

Tip No. 19: Chew sugarless gum.

The next time you want to grab a fattening snack, reach for some sugar-free gum instead. Chewing some types of gum gives you fresh breath and can also help manage hunger, control snack cravings, and aid in weight loss. (Keep in mind, however, that excess sorbitol, a sugar alcohol sometimes used in low calorie gums, can have an laxative effect in some people.) Although gum might make you eat less, it doesn’t mean you can stop eating right. A good diet and exercise are still important.

Tip No. 20: Keep a food diary.

20/22

A simple pen and paper can dramatically boost your weight loss. Studies show the act of writing down what you eat and drink tends to make you more aware of what, when, and how much you’re consuming — leading you to ultimately take in fewer calories. One study found that people who kept a food diary six days a week lost about twice as much as those who only kept a diary one day a week or less.

Tip No. 21: Celebrate success (but not with food).

You lost five pounds this month and walked every other day? Time to celebrate! Rewarding weight loss success really can encourage more success, so revel in your achievements. Buy a CD, take in a movie, and set a prize for the next milestone. Just don’t celebrate with a sundae or deep dish pizza.

Tip No. 22: Get help from family and friends.

Getting support can help you reach your weight loss goals. So tell family and friends about your efforts to lead a healthy lifestyle. Maybe they’ll join you in exercising, eating right, and losing weight. When you feel like giving up, they’ll help you, keep you honest, and cheer you on — making the whole experience a lot easier.

GROWING CABBAGES.

There is a common saying that usually does the rounds which goes like, “ Do you want to be a millionaire?, plant 1 million cabbages and sell them for ksh 10 each.” This statement is certainly premised on the belief that it is easy to grow cabbages. Well those who have grown cabbages before will agree with me if I say that whilst it might be relatively easy to grow cabbages, it is more difficult to grow them well. By this I imply that achieving sufficiently good yields that are financially rewarding as well as the quality standards that are competitive on the market is a toll order for many farmers. The following discussion attempts to assist farmers to negotiate the pitfalls on the way to attaining a good yield of cabbages of unquestionable quality.

  1. Climatic Conditions

Cabbages grow well in most areas round where irrigation water is available. They require cooler temperatures such ranging from 18C- 21C which is the reason why cabbages are mostly grown in the cooler months of the year particularly in agro-ecological regions 3,4 and 5 where ambient temperatures tend to be unbearably high during the summer months. On the other hand cabbages can resist ground frost especially overnight freezing though it hampers the growth processes when such conditions become protracted.

  1. Soils:

Cabbages require deep well drained soils particularly loams which are pregnant with organic matter. A farmer should ensure that the soils are not too acidic as this is detrimental to the growth of the cabbages. A pH range of between 5.5-6.5 is recommended. A deep ploughing of up to 60cm is recommended as it is famed for promoting good rooting system as well as instrumental in breaking pest and disease cycles. Owing to the fact that nematodes can be a menace in many cabbage fields , soil fumigation is recommended and should be carried out a fortnight prior to transplanting of seedlings.

  1. Establishment methods:

Cabbage can be planted either by direct seeding or through establishment of a nursery first from which seedlings are transplanted to the main field. Direct seeding is often practiced under small holdings but on large scale operations seedling transplanting becomes more practical. The latter method is the most popular with farmers in Southern Africa. Seedlings are transplanted from the nursery after hardening and having attained a height of between 7.5cm to 8cm and this height is achieved after 4-6 weeks depending with the seed variety. Seedlings are planted using spacing of 60cm by 60cm and the field should immediately be irrigated after transplanting. I however should point it out at this point that when irrigating cabbages, care should be undertaken to avoid water-logging as this goes a long way in circumventing the occurrence of stem and root rot diseases.

  1. Fertiliser requirements:

It is always recommended that one should have their soil tested in order to be able to determine the level of fertilisation needed. Cabbages require a total of 250-300kg/ha of nitrogen. The fertiliser is best applied in the form of a compound fertiliser providing phosphorus, magnesium and potash to the tune of 100kg/ha, 100kg/ha and 200kg/ha respectively just before transplanting. As pointed out earlier the exact amount needed in one’s field is calculable after the soil has been tested.

  1. Weed control:

It is important for a farmer ensure that their field is always free of weeds as this ensures that all the fertiliser and water provided benefits the crop entirely. Experts also state that a clean field is less prone to pests and diseases since some of these come into the field via the network of weeds. Mechanical cultivation should be done during land preparation until the plants are about half-grown. The first cultivation should be done 2 to 3 weeks after transplanting. This however is not a rule of thumb as farmers are should weed as frequently as their weed challenge requires.

  1. Pests and diseases:

Cabbages are affected by a lot of pests at any point of their growth . The most common examples that easily come to mind are aphids, bollworms, diamond black moths, Bagrada bug, red spider mites, cabbage webworm, cutworms and nematodes. The most troublesome cabbage diseases that growers may encounter are damping- off, clubroot, fusarium wilt, blackleg, downy mildew, blackrot and leafspot to mention but a few.. In order to avoid losses through disease and pests, farmers should routinely spray their cabbages with chemicals. They are also encouraged to use certified seed always or if not possible treat all seed with hot water before planting their nurseries. Treatment of seedbeds with fungicides is also another way of breaking the pest and disease cycles. Weed control has always been implicated as instrumental in assisting the control of pests in cabbages especially if the area is infested with cruciferous weeds. Last but certainly not the least is the fact that farmers should avoid planting cabbages in same field time after time, it is recommended that they practice crop rotations in order to deal with the pest and diseases.

Questions:

1) Please recommend the spraying regime to curb pest & disease infestation
2)Also what are the tradenames for the pesticides on the market, currently?
3) What are the herbicides used in controlling weeds in cabbages?
4) What is the ideal basal fertilizer recommended for cabbages?
5) Please elaborate on ,”100kg,100kg&200kg just before transplanting”
